Our Family Bedtime Routine with I Can Read! Books

By Mary Shoemaker May 18, 2017

Every night in our house, we repeat the same routine. Just before bed, my kids each choose a favorite book and we all snuggle under the covers together to read. When they were younger, they listened intently while I read to them. But now, at age 5 and 6, they are thrilled that we can reverse roles and they can read to me!

Our favorites books are from the I Can Read! series, specifically made for children who are learning how to read. Each I Can Read! book focuses attention on language, simple sentence structure, engaging stories told through action and dialogue, and words that children can sound out and read themselves -- and of all that means my kids are incredibly proud that they can read, too!

The books are color-coordinated based on difficulty into 5 different levels, making it easy to choose the right one for your child. The books range from Yellow (for emergent readers with basic language, word repetition, and whimsical illustrations) to Purple (advanced reading with short paragraphs, chapters, and exciting themes providing the perfect bridge to chapter books.)

This year, I Can Read is celebrating 60 years of helping generations of readers develop a love for books. Some of the classics I enjoyed as a kid are still going on new adventures, including Amelia Bedelia, Danny and the Dinosaur, Frog and Toad, and Little Bear. They've also introduced new characters include Pete the Cat, Pinkalicious, Fancy Nancy, and many more. Each one keeps the kids engaged and excited to see what happens next.
