Groceries Made Easy: A Wegmans Instacart Review

By Mary Shoemaker December 5, 2017

I really, really dislike grocery shopping. Now that I'm a parent, the dreaded weekly task takes on even more of a challenge. I have two choices to get the job done-- neither of them ideal. My options are:

A. Take the kids to the store with me and power through as quickly as possible, trying my best to avoid meltdowns, unwanted items in the cart or kids running up and down the aisles like wild animals.

B. Leave the kids with another adult and sacrifice precious "me" time to shop.

But guess what? There's now a third option, and it's FANTASTIC! Meet Wegmans Instacart!

This is a service that utilizes a personal shopper to take care of your shopping for you. All you need to do is login to the site and add desired items to your cart. When you checkout, you'll choose your delivery time (as little an hour from the time you place your order!) and let your shopper do the rest. I tried the service for the first time last week, and absolutely loved it! Check out a quick video on my experience below.

Here are some tips:

  1. Use your Wegman's Shopper Club card to get the lowest prices. There's also a Coupons section of the site where you can clip manufacturer’s digital coupons for the items you are purchasing.
  2. Give your personal shopper special instructions. I'm sort of particular about how I like my produce (bananas must be slightly green, for example), so I put this in the notes and my shopper delivered exactly what I requested.
  3. Request replacement items. Concerned an item might be out of stock? You can pre-choose replacement items for them to grab if needed. Or, you can do it on-the-spot from your phone. While my shopper was at Wegman's I got a text message that the chicken I requested was not available. My shopper suggested several replacement items that might work, which was incredibly helpful. I got the same message about one of my snack items but chose a refund instead. It was so easy!
  4. Stay near your phone. As they shop, you'll be able to log on and see what's in the cart at any given time. You'll also get real-time notifications when shopping starts, if anything is out of stock, when the order is complete and an estimated ETA after they leave.
  5. If you can dream it, you can have it! Wegman's has more than just groceries, and all of their items are available through the instacart service. When we ordered our groceries, we decided to add on some of their awesome sushi for dinner.
