Ready, Set, Goals! Help your kids set SMART goals for the New Year

By Melissa Baltazar January 2, 2025

The New Year is a great time to help your kids set goals they’ll actually stick to! SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—make it easier (and more fun!) for kids to dream big and take action.

Here’s how you can help:

🎯 Keep It Specific
Help your child focus on one clear goal. Instead of saying, “do better in school,” try, “complete homework before dinner each night.”

📏 Make It Measurable
Choose goals they can track, like “practice piano for 20 minutes three times a week.” Seeing progress is a big confidence booster!

🤸 Aim for Achievable
Encourage realistic goals based on your child’s age and interests. Younger kids might aim to clean their room daily, while older ones could save money for something special.

💡 Keep It Relevant
Goals should be exciting and meaningful! If your teen loves writing, they could set a goal to draft a short story by the end of February.

⏰ Add a Time Frame
A deadline keeps things on track. Set mini-goals along the way to keep the momentum going!
