10 Sports Safety Tips to Keep Kids Injury-Free This Spring

A few simple habits can help children avoid sports and activity injuries. Here are ten safety tips for an injury-free season:

  1. Always wear a properly fitted helmet when riding a bike, scooter, or skateboard. Helmets should fit snugly on a child's head.
  2. Check your bike routinely. Make sure the tires are filled with air and that the brakes work.
  3. Follow the rules of the road when riding a bike, scooter, or skateboard. Children should stop at signs, look both ways and use hand signals.
  4. Make sure that your child is wearing the right protective gear for every sport, which can include mouth guards, shin guards, knee pads, and other gear.
  5. Warm up for 5-10 minutes before exercise to help prepare muscles for activity.
  6. Stretch after physical activities to reduce soreness and improve flexibility.
  7. Pay attention to pain. Swelling, limping or pain that lasts more than a few days should not be ignored.
  8. Help children stay hydrated before, during and after activity, especially in warm weather.
  9. Make sure children wear athletic shoes that fit well and are designed for their activity.
  10. Schedule an annual physical before the sports season begins. A physical can identify health concerns and help prevent future injuries.

Safe habits make a big difference. With the correct preparation, children can stay healthy and active.
