Its Spring!!!

top image

Saturday, March 20th, is... FINALLY... the first day of Spring.  Early flowers have already started to poke out of the ground and a few are even blooming.  Hopefully, the snows are done until next year.

There is so much to do over the next couple of weeks, Easter and Spring events are happening everywhere.  My plan will be to just get the kids outside (without 20 layers on) and simply enjoy nature.  Tuesday's wonderful warmth allowed me to spend some one-on-one time with my son, Griffin, on the grounds of the Reading Public Museum, while my daugter, Hunter, enjoyed a cooking class at Young Chefs Academy.  Griffin and I watched the ducks and geese and said "hello" to some happy dogs, who were also out for walks.   Of course, I didn't think to bring a camera and missed some great photo opportunities!   There is always Easter day at the museum to make up for it.

Speaking of getting out and into nature, if you haven't already signed up for the Bronx Zoo Run/Walk for the Wild, know that there is only a month left.  The Run/Walk is a great way to have the kids experience the Bronx zoo for the day with some great extra events, while you get to give a little something to a great cause.  The "Macaronikid.com" team would love to have you join them!  More information is available in the Run/Walk for the Wild article below.

Have a great beginning of Spring week!

Bronx Zoo Run/Walk for the Wild

Join the Macaronikid.com Team!

top image

The Bronx Zoo, Run for the Wild is a family fun fundraising event, scheduled for April 24th and Macaronikid.com is building its own team!  There are already five people (including myself) who have signed up for the Macaronikid.com Team from our area!!

Adult registration is $30 and a child's and senior's registration is $20 (children under 3 are free).  With registration you will gain entry into the event and into the Bronx Zoo for the day (the best zoo on the East coast in my opinion), get an event T-shirt, and free parking, as well as entertainment, kids-activities and much more.

This is only the second year for the Run for the Wild event and the theme is "Make Tracks for Tigers".  The donations collected will go to support the Wildlife Conservation Society’s project in Asia to create safe areas where tigers can thrive and reducing the threats to their survival.

On April 24th check-in begins at 7am.  You will collect your T-shirt at that time and let the organizers know you're there.  The group warm-up starts at 8:15am.  The race for runners will begin at 8:30 and the race for the rest of us begins at 9am.  The entire course is a 5K or 3.1-miles and takes you throughout the zoo.  Though the event is from 7am - 11:30am, participants are welcome to spend the day with the animals at the zoo.

Register online http://e.wcs.org/site/TR?fr_id=1040&pg=entry, click "join a team" and type in "Macaronikid.com", then follow the directions.

Would like to go, but feeling concerned about how to get there.  Contact me and I'll be happy to guide you through it, whether you decide to drive or take the bus.  lauraj@macaronikid.com

Not able to go, but realize that saving wildlife is everyones responsibility or just think tigers are super cute?  Go to http://e.wcs.org/site/TR and be sure to type in "Macaronikid.com" under donate for a team.

The race/walk is rain or shine, so if you prefer to wait until the day of Run for the Wild you may, however there is an additional $5 fee - making an adults registration total $35.

Arthur's Back!

top image
Over the years, ARTHUR has celebrated kids with all kinds of abilities and featured many types of friendships. As part of season 13, ARTHUR welcomes back familiar faces and introduces new friends with unique stories to tell.  Five new episodes premiere Monday, April 5 on PBS KIDS GO!

One very special episode is "When Carl Met George" - George discovers that Carl has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism, and that Carl sees the world a bit differently than George and many kids.  Despite their differences, George and Carl become great pals - and learn a lot from each other.  The story is followed by a live-action segment featuring kids with Asperger's and autism.

Rock Art!

top image
Although the weather may still be a bit too brisk to fully enjoy the season, here is a fun craft you can do in preparation for the warm weather!

Collect a lot of rocks. Be sure there are different sizes and shapes.
Start by choosing the rocks.  Flat ones for designs and shapely ones for a pet rock!

Paint the entire rock, top and bottom in one color and place on wax paper to dry.
When the first coat of paint dries, paint on the details such as a lady bug, flowers or eyes and whiskers!
Almost any type of acrylic paint will work.  Try to find some thick paints so that the rock won't show through.
Kids can love to be creative and your rocks can  become a door stop, book end, garden ornament, or paper weight.  A collection of painted rocks can be used to form stepping stones.  They make a great gift for grandparents too!

All you have to do is read

top image
Reading aloud to a child is important to their language development and builds a foundation for their future success as a reader. It's a magic moment when a child catches on to the connection between what their parent is reading and the words on the page of a book.

Strong reading skills make everything easier in the education world.  And if your child becomes a strong reader it will in turn alleviate pressure when other subjects may present challenges. Children take to reading eagerly and naturally.

A little encouragement of this natural curiosity goes a long way - and the child does all the real work.

Read to Your Child Everyday - it's important to be relaxed and unhurried.  If time doesn't permit, bring books along where you go.  Even if children are left to explore the books on their own, the fact that you bring books shows the child the importance of reading to you.

Read and Re-Read - Be patient and read your child's favorites a few times, especially if they request them specifically.  Kids are new to stories and when something catches them they want to relive it over and over again.

Read it Right - Take the time to read the story well. Children know the difference. If you read without enthusiasm your child will lose interest and probably feel like he's putting you out. If reading becomes a chore or - worse yet - a source of stress, it will have reverse the desired effect.

Choosing the Right Book - Take seriously what your child tells you about the books they like. You'll catch on pretty fast to their interests and you'll be able to guide their choices while respecting their tastes. Go to the library together. Let them respond to what they see and let them have a say in the decision.

Build a Home Library - Think about collecting the classics; you might even discover a forgotten yearning in yourself for a long lost favorite. Give books a place of honor in your home. Teach your children to respect them and care for them.

When Elmo and his Sesame Street Live friends think about growing up, it’s a musical show-and-tell!  Bert dreams of becoming a forest ranger, Telly longs to be a cowboy and their newest friend, Abby Cadabby, wants to be a Fairy Godmother just like her mommy.  Elmo thinks about becoming a ‘weather monster,’ but has a hard time predicting his own forecast—he wants to be anything and everything all at once!  “When Elmo Grows Up” includes lessons on perseverance, teamwork and the power of imagination.  Children learn that if they believe in themselves and are willing to try, the possibilities are endless.
